ISO opposes the term inherent to assigned and defines inherent as existing in something, especially as a permanent characteristic. Inherent characteristics are characteristics that are a natural part of something and cannot be separated from it. Question 2: Why should quality be restricted to inherent characteristics? Consequently, the number of wheels is not part of quality management. This mean that the quality of a car is not defined by the number of wheels. According to the Longman dictionary, a distinguished feature is a one that makes something different from others of the same type.Īn undistinguished feature may be the number of wheels of a car. This means that other features than distinguished features are not included in the definition of quality. Question 1: Why should quality be restricted to characteristics?Ī characteristic is defined by ISO as a distinguished feature. This blog will raise some questions about this definition because it restricts the meaning of the term quality  and it is unclear to what this definition applies. We often take this definition for granted. ISO 9000’s definition of quality is “degree to which a set of inherent characteristics fulfils requirementâ€.
